The Characters
Amelia van den Broek
Newly sixteen, Amelia travels to worldly Baltimore to spend a season with her cousin Zora Stewart. In a whirlwind of public balls and private dinner parties, she discovers she has the gift of sight- and finds herself enchanted by a mysterious Fourteenth.
Zora Stewart
Equal parts bright and saucy, Zora Stewart makes fast friends with Amelia. She encourages Amelia to use her visions to expand their social circle- but makes it clear that she wishes to keep her own future with doctor's son Thomas entirely to herself.
Nathaniel Witherspoon
Though he's only seventeen, Nathaniel Witherspoon lives on his own. To make ends meet, he hires himself out as a Fourteenth- someone to make sure there's never an unlucky 13 guests. But his passion is for art, and for Amelia- a girl he can't have, but reaches for all the same.
Thomas Rea
A doctor's son and every inch a gentleman, Thomas Rea is devoted to Zora- and gently tormented by the scandalous things that Zora, Amelia and even Nathaniel convince him to do. Nevertheless, he manages to maintain both dignity and chivalry, no matter the cost.
Sarah Holbrook
Sarah Holbrook prefers archery to dancing, and swears one day, she'll shock her well-to-do family by marrying a working man. In the meantime, she's more than happy to play parlour games with her friends, and keep watch over her timid best friend, Mattie.
Mattie Corey
Quiet and gentle, Mattie Corey seems happy to enjoy the glow of her more vibrant friends, and longs, more than anything, to have a beau of her own.
